Job Summary:

The College of Letters and Science (L&S) is the heart of UW-Madison and home to a tremendous breadth and depth of departments and degree-granting programs in the humanities; natural, physical, and mathematical sciences; social sciences; and the computing, data, and information sciences. Join the L&S HR team in this Recruitment Specialist role with an opportunity to make a positive impact by serving our units to aid in the recruitment process for L&S staff.

Under the general direction of the Associate HR Director, L&S Staff Recruitment Specialists are responsible for providing recruitment expertise and services for staff recruitments within L&S. These positions serve as a point of contact to recruit, retain, and sustain a high-quality workforce prepared to address the needs of the college. This includes recruitment, marketing, and outreach, promoting recruitment best practices, onboarding, and related areas. These positions will utilize strategies to attract both passive and active job seekers and establish a talent pipeline.

We are seeking candidates who are self-motivated, collaborative, innovative, and service-oriented for this important role. These positions are responsible for ensuring services are equitable, inclusive, and promote a sense of belonging. These positions will have the opportunity to work independently and collaboratively with the L&S HR team and key partners across the college and campus to advance opportunities for positive impact, develop efficient processes and best practices, resolve complex issues, ensure compliance, and meet overall organizational needs.


Serves as a point of contact to the campus community to recruit, retain, and sustain a high-quality workforce prepared to address challenges in an educational environment.

  • 15% Executes recruitment activities and works with assessment and selection strategies that strengthen the institution and/or division’s ability to be a leader in education
  • 20% Collaborates with and provides guidance to unit representatives and hiring managers to deliver effective and efficient strategies that identify, attract, and lead to hiring high-quality talent
  • 15% Builds and strengthens key relationships and serves as a liaison to internal and external stakeholders
  • 10% Serves as a recruitment, assessment, and selection subject matter expert to develop, implement, facilitate and update the institution and/or division’s recruitment, assessment, and selection policies and procedures
  • 10% Implements institutional and/or divisional plans to improve service, ensure compliance, support reporting, and aid in operational and strategic decision-making processes
  • 30% Supports the full cycle of the recruiting process including need assessment, search strategy creation, research, recruiting, interviewing, assessments, referencing, offer creation and negotiation, and onboarding coordination

Bachelor’s Degree in HR or Business Administration or equivalent work experience.


Required Qualifications:
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to foster and maintain collaborative, and effective relationships with managers, supervisors, staff, and campus partners
* Demonstrated sound judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting HR or related laws, rules, policies and procedures and ability to maintain confidentiality
* Demonstrated ability to apply respect, diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging practices throughout assigned responsibilities
* Effective problem-solving skills and the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders on multiple, complex topics
* Ability to independently plan, establish priorities, and organize varied and complex tasks

Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience in Human Resources or related role
* Understanding of talent acquisition sourcing and recruitment methods to find top talent
* Experience with recruiting different types of roles such as: administrative, research, outreach, and instructional positions
* Experience with improving processes, managing change, and/or applying systems thinking to work
* Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to navigate and utilize a Human Resource Information Systems (e.g. PageUp, PeopleSoft, Workday, etc.)
* Experience in a higher education or similar work environment

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Minimum $55,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The typical starting salary for this position is $55,000 – $71,000 depending on qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is $55,000 to $92,300. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays and paid time off; competitive insurances and saving accounts; and retirement benefits.
