Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the
Retail Supervisor position. The Retail Supervisor is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $21.35 per hour. Given Amherst’s
distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which

The Retail Supervisor supports the efforts of
Amherst College Dining Services by providing the diverse campus community with excellent service. This position supports a diverse workforce
and participates in the College’s efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment. This position ensures that the
quantity and quality of our production are consistent with the standards of Dining Services and works with members of the team to limit
discrepancies and engage our customers with the spirit of genuine hospitality.

This individual may supervise the Schwemm’s Mammoth
Market operation, Science Cafe or Frost Cafe with customer focused service and produces menu components from fresh and exceptional
ingredients, while being proficient in the technical skill and knowledge required to achieve this. The supervisor will assist the Retail
Operations Manager with the training and coaching of employees to ensure that our operational goals and objectives are achieved in the
service of our student customers and in meeting their expectations.

The work schedule varies and corresponds to the College’s retail
operational needs, but generally is Sunday thru Thursday 9:00 am to 5:30 pm. Summer hours are generally 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. A flexible
schedule with early or extended shift times is sometimes required. This individual may be asked to work in other areas of Dining Services
based on operational needs.

As our work is central to student life, their needs occur at a variety of times throughout the day,
week, and year and in such, a flexible schedule with extended shift times is required. In addition, the position is designated as providing
essential services and should report to work or remain on duty even though the College is closed.

Summary of
Responsibilities:

Customer Service and Preparation

  • Provide professional, courteous and efficient customer
    service
  • Accurately and expediently enter orders into the Point-of-Sale System
  • Ensure that cash handling procedures of the
    College are followed and maintained
  • Prepare menu items to established standards including the adherence to and use of standardized
    recipes and production methods, ensuring recipes are followed, and all items are of the highest possible quality, production values and loss
    are recorded accurately
  • Maintain the inventory, presentation and cleanliness of the coffee station and beverage
    coolers
  • Perform and/or supervise general area cleaning to include floors, counters, equipment, customer use areas such as dining
    room tables
  • Ensure equipment used is in sound, working order; and tools used are properly cared for and stored
  • Perform work
    in a safe and efficient manner; ensure operational organization at all times
  • Provide support for special events
  • Perform
    grease, recycling, composting and trash removal

Supervision

  • Provide operational supervision, both directly and in
    conjunction with the Manager of Retail Dining, over the daily culinary operations while supporting the culinary-service team with the
    planning, production and implementation of menus and systems
  • Provide for the consistent and pro-active communication of operational
    needs and customer concern
  • Provide and maintain the tools, information, resources, and support necessary to enable the team’s
    success
  • Overall supervision of daily operation including staff and student employees
  • Supervise all staff on storage,
    portioning, and handling of menu items
  • Perform inspections of Stations and Service areas in support of established
    standards
  • Maintain the accuracy of production schedules and usage reports
  • Manage inventory and the organization of
    Production Storage Areas
  • Insure that the operation is secure, organized, safe and clean during service and at the close of
    business
  • Maintain a commitment to the quality of our resources and work to prevent loss and eliminate waste
  • Promote our
    standards of quality and service and the safety of our work environment
  • Provide limited supervision of Keefe Campus Center in late
    hours reporting issues, concerns and/or emergencies through the appropriate channels
  • Help create, manage, and serve seasonal, fresh
    menus from exceptional ingredients
  • Assist with product and process refinement, new product research and development
  • Correct
    discrepancies in production sheets and recipes and submit to Culinary Management for review
  • Assist manager with performance
    evaluation, coaching and problem resolution

Communication and Workday

  • Regularly checking your amherst.edu email is required
    to stay up to date on college-wide and departmental communications
    • This includes communication by email, message boards and The Daily
      Mammouth
    • Important information is shared through these communications that affect your job and help you stay up to date on
      departmental specific updates, upcoming meetings and events
  • Learning and using Workday to manage clocking in and out for
    shifts, time off requests and all other functions required to manage your personal
    information

Qualifications:

Required

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Allergen Awareness Certified,
    as required by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or be able to achieve within six months of employment
  • Current SERV Safe Manager
    Certification or be able to achieve within (6) months of employment
  • 3 + year of retail & food preparation experience
  • Strong
    verbal and written communication, customer service, organizational, and time management skills
  • Ability to taste and work with any
    and all ingredients used
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to multi-task and function
    efficiently in a fast-paced environment
  • Attention to detail
  • Commitment to effectively working with a diverse
    community
  • Successful completion of pre-employment physical and lift test

Preferred

  • Education or certified training
    in Hospitality or Foodservice Management
  • 3 – 5 years of supervisory experience in retail food service
