DESCRIPTION
Under
the general direction of the Senior Director of HR Strategy & Policy, the Director of Employee Relations leads and manages the employee
relations function for UC San Diego, a public research university that is committed to transforming California and a diverse global society.
The Director Provides advice to supervisors, managers and directors on the full range of employee relations matters. Participates in short
and long range strategic planning for the unit. Formulates and/or participates in formulation of establishing unit goals, objectives, and
policies. Designs, develops, interprets, revises and implements department processes, procedures and guidelines. Participates in UC San
Diego and UC-wide ER committees and teams, as needed.
The Director collaborates with peer supervisors and managers across the campus
and serves as a trusted advisor to senior leadership across campus. Plans and directs the delivery of employee relations services and also
responsible for providing the full scope of professional employee relations activities for the UC San Diego campus. Exercises judgment
within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Provides a safe and neutral process that acknowledges an
individual’s right to address concerns and encourages the resolution of such without reprisal. The Director will need to work with people
from diverse backgrounds and cultures and taking the diversity into account when offering suggestions and guidance addressing issues such as
performance management, organizational changes, work place climate, and other related matters. The Director identifies problems and proposes
solutions, and anticipates future needs, challenges and opportunities, working closely with other HR managers on long term planning.
The incumbent screens applications, interviews candidates, and either makes selection decisions or recommends individuals for hire.
Trains and assigns work to new and continuing employees. Provides guidance to staff on performance standards and University procedures to
ensure employees are properly trained and evaluated. Independently conducts performance evaluations, including communication with
subordinates. Makes recommendations for employee incentive awards and salary increases including merits and reclassifications. Determines
what discipline should be imposed for subordinates, with authority to apply such, and/or submits/recommends same to higher level management.
Trains employees accordingly and supervises for adherence to new process/communication changes.
As part of the regular
responsibilities of this position, the incumbent sees confidential documents which are used by management in developing positions related to
collective bargaining, attends meetings where management positions and strategies regarding collective bargaining issues are discussed, and
gathers data important to the formulation of management positions in collective bargaining. Therefore this position is designated as
Confidential under HEERA.
- Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

access to reliable transportation.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in related area or an equivalent
combination of experience/training. J.D. preferred. - Thorough knowledge of the employee relations field and other areas of
HR. - Thorough knowledge of applicable federal and state labor laws and regulations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of administering
labor/union contracts, dispute resolution, grievance procedures, and facilitation and mediation processes. - Must have effective
management and organizational leadership skills. - Maintains effective professional relationships with campus department managers as
well as other managers in human resources. Provides written analyses, recommendations and verbal presentations to
management. - Maintains a thorough understanding of the goals of the campus and ways in which this position can support those
goals. - Strong analytical, problem solving, critical thinking and organizational skills, and advanced computer
skills. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to handle extremely difficult or volatile
situations/individuals effectively. - Demonstrated competency with and commitment to equity, diversity and
inclusion.

Pay Range: $78,900 – $179,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $37.79 – $86.16
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education,
licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the
budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader
than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when
applicable).
