The Coordinator of Academic Policy manages the academic policy exception for the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) at the University of Michigan. As the largest college on the Ann Arbor campus, LSA serves over 18,000 undergraduate students in over 100 degree programs.
The Office of Student Academic Affairs (SAA) plays an important role in the undergraduate educational mission of LSA. Sitting within LSA?s Division of Undergraduate Education (UGED), SAA serves as an advocate and support for all LSA undergraduate students. SAA provides support to students, faculty, and staff who are navigating challenging situations and in creating an inclusive learning environment. The office also provides guidance on college academic policies, manages the exception process, and oversees the academic misconduct process for LSA. Lastly, SAA includes the degree auditing unit for the college which supports academic policy and registrar-associated functions.
The Coordinator of Academic Policy in the Office of Student Academic Affairs manages the college policy exception process for LSA. Working in partnership with the Director of the Office of Student Academic Affairs, the coordinator will make decisions regarding policy exceptions, develop and update workflows for exception submission and processing, and implement initiatives to increase awareness of LSA academic policies and the exception process for both students and staff.
Working in partnership with the Director of Student Academic Affairs, the successful candidate will be a primary resource for students, faculty, and staff seeking guidance on academic policy issues. They will be expected to revise the current process and update websites to provide greater transparency to the policy exception process. They will also have the opportunity to cultivate relationships across the university as it relates to student support.
Coordination of the Academic Policy Exception Process (75%)
- Manage the day-to-day responsibilities of the academic policy exception process for LSA, including reviewing and making decisions regarding policy exception requests
- Assess and make recommendations for improvements to the academic policy exception process and workflow
- Make recommendations based on best practices related to academic policy and policy exceptions
- Maintain websites related to LSA academic policy and the exception process
- Serve as a resource for students, faculty, and administrators, answering questions about the academic policy exception process
Benchmarking and Engagement (15%)
- Benchmark academic policies and policy exception processes at peer institutions and other units on campus as well as emerging trends and research in higher education related to academic policy
- Facilitate a yearly policy review process
- Engage with other units in LSA and across the university regarding academic policy
Service to the Office of Student Academic Affairs (10%)
- Serve as a campus partner to other academic policy-related offices across the university
- Assist with projects and collaborations in support of the undergraduate student experience
- Represent the Office of Student Academic Affairs on LSA and University of Michigan committees, task forces, and working groups
General supervision is received from the Director of Student Academic Affairs.
Functional and administrative supervision over student workers
- Advanced degree in a liberal arts field, higher education, or area of study affording an understanding of the undergraduate student experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- At least three years of student services and/or academic advising experience in a college or university setting
- Knowledge of current trends in academic policy in higher education
- Knowledge of student development theory
- Good judgment, discretion, and the ability to handle sensitive information
- Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and identities
- Proven ability to successfully work in a collaborative team environment
- Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to establish positive and respectful working relationships with students, staff, and faculty
