Department Purpose

This position is one of three academic personnel specialists in the Plant Sciences Department within the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. There are approximately ~84 Senate and CE Specialist and approximately ~70 Federation members in the department. The position works with a wide diversity of academic positions including: Academic senate and federation personnel; Unit 18 and SOE lecturers; international and visiting l scholars.

Job Summary

Under general supervision, provide department-level coordination of all International Visiting Scholar appointments, hiring of Postdocs, and facilitate, lead, and manage the process for all required visa sponsorship paperwork, including permanent residency, for the faculty, academics, and staff in the department of Plant Sciences. Serve as the department liaison to the office of Services for International Students and Scholars (SISS) on U.S. immigration policies and regulations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

* Sit at computer terminal, using of keyboard and mouse, for extended periods of time.

* Work occasional overtime including evenings and weekends to meet operational needs and deadlines.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

* One to two years of experience working in an international services office or the equivalent work with international and visiting personnel.

* Experience managing and processing J-1 and H-1B visas and Permanent Residency petitions in a higher education environment.

* Experience in a customer service and customer satisfaction environment, with an emphasis on meeting client needs with attention to details.

* Interpersonal communication skills to clearly and effectively interact with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives in order to research and secure information to resolve problems and recommend alternatives.

* Analytical skills to anticipate problems, perform research, and develop creative solutions, including goal setting and delegating.

* High level organizational skills to work on projects with competing deadlines and to independently establish goals and workload priorities with flexibility in dealing with people and deadlines.

* Grammar, editing, and proofreading skills to compose business correspondence, forms, and reports with attention to detail.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Experience applying relevant immigrant and non-immigrant employment policy to university policy as it pertains to the hiring of international employees.

* Experience managing and processing all other types of employment visas beyond J-1 and H-1B.

* Experience working with a ticketing or case management system to organize/track work, and experience using automated personnel and/or accounting systems and programs.

* Knowledge of UC Davis policies, procedures, and processes relevant to visiting scholars, academic personnel
