Position Description

The Harvard Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology (HSCRB) is a cross-school department, committed to the advancement of biomedical research and to delivering innovative teaching at the interface of biology and medicine. HSCRB seeks an energetic, collaborative Assistant Director of Graduate Studies (ADGS) to lead the delivery of HSCRB graduate programming, including curriculum and training design, development and management, logistics and project management for masters and doctoral programs. Reporting to the Department’s Director of Education, the ADGS will also play a pivotal role in continued innovation in the department’s teaching portfolio, and in student advising. The ADGS works closely with the SCRB Education Team to operationalize and strengthen course work, and to provide opportunities for additional learning, mentoring, and engagement. The ADGS will also oversee any staff (most notably Curriculum and Pedagogy Managers) supporting graduate education. More specifically, the Assistant Director will:

  • Advise students who are part of the MS/MBA in Biotechnology: Life Sciences joint degree program, providing guidance on course selection, requirements, and other aspects of curricular planning. Facilitates the process of finding appropriate science mentors for MS/MBA students. Oversees the capstone project.
  • Collaborate with faculty on curriculum development and continued innovation in how and what we teach. Co-lead course development which may include recommendation and implementation of course sequencing, scheduling, grading processes, and exam sessions. Act as an advising resource for faculty and other academics regarding educational strategies and formats.
  • May teach courses (typically one per year) as determined by field of expertise and the needs of the program. Researches and develops course program and materials.
  • Envision, oversee, and develop events and programs related to graduate academic affairs.
  • Develop specialized reports to evaluate program success; track and comply with any reporting requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with University policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations.
  • Provide accurate policy guidance to faculty and other academics.
  • May co-lead administrative management for faculty and other academics involving graduate recruitment, admissions, appointment, and development.
  • Foster relationships with partner offices at HBS, FAS and HMS to increase interest and participation in programs, coordinate enrollment and student onboarding.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 7 years’ relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Ph.D. in a life science discipline.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong commitment to continuous process improvement.
  • Some supervisory experience preferred; strong organizational and interpersonal skills necessary, as well as demonstrated written and oral communication skills; demonstrated commitment to education and student life essential; strong initiative; ability to work with diverse constituencies required. Experience advising students (undergraduate or graduate) highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, advanced Excel skills.
  • This position may hold a concurrent, dependent appointment as Lecturer in Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting using near vision use for reading and computer use for extended periods of time
  • Lifting (approximately 20 to 30 pounds), bending, and other physical exertion

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process.
