Duties and Responsibilities

Provides academic
assistance, support, guidance and information to new and continuing students. This position is assigned to the Academic Advising Center, and
imbedded in the academic departments, online programs and regional centers to ensure student success and improved retention.

  • Assist
    students in developing an educational plan upon entry to the University, through the selection of courses and a major field of study that
    are consistent with their life goals, abilities and interests.

  • Assist students with adjusting to college; encourage
    establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals.
  • Facilitate learning communities; advises students in
    group and one-on-one sessions;
  • Provides academic assistance, support, guidance and information to new and continuing
    students, in a face-to-face or virtual format; provide one-on-one or group advising sessions.
  • Provides guidance each
    semester for completing general education and core requirements for the student’s selected field of study.
  • Provides
    information to students regarding academic policies and procedures specific to the student’s discipline, as well as graduation requirements
    for Bowie State University.
  • Facilitate academic success and retention by providing guidance on timely movement through
    academic majors.
  • Monitors academic progress of students each semester; maintains student files in online
    filing/communication system (Starfish/iCan)
  • Advise students on academic, career and personal issues, making appropriate
    referrals to the Career Development Center and Counseling Services, whenever necessary.
  • Assist students with resources on
    career exploration and encourage assistance with interest assessments and resume writing in the Career Development Center;

  • By the end of the transfer student’s first semester at the University, ensure transfer credit is appropriately evaluated and course
    substitutions approved in the academic department.
  • Meet with students to review their degree-in-progress status and plan
    for final semesters;
  • Assist students with “what if scenarios” to change majors if they do not meet the academic criteria
    required in their first chosen major.
  • Assist students with seeking out leadership opportunities in the academic
    department, academic college, or college wide leadership positions within student affairs.
  • Encourage students to seek
    out-of-classroom opportunities in research and internships reflective of the major, to build their resume.
  • Assist students
    with resources available on campus to assist with writings papers, including junior papers and senior theses. and other course writing
    assignments or tutoring services, as needed.
  • Advise students of graduation application deadlines. Directs students to the
    appropriate faculty for information on post-baccalaureate and graduate programs.
  • Help to prepare students to enter the
    workforce.
  • Teach at least two sections of three-credit, Freshman Seminar (FRSE 101) course each academic year.
  • Serve on committees, lead projects and present to large and small groups as needed.
  • Education

    • Master’s Degree from and accredited institution to include counseling, education, higher
      education, student development or field related to advising duties is required.

    Experience

    • Minimum of two (2) years of prior employment in academic advising, student services or higher education.
    • Strong student
      support focus required.
    • Strong interpersonal communication, collaborative, organizational and external representation skills
      required.
    • Attention to detail is required along with initiative, drive, flexibility, and ability to excel in a diverse
      environment.
    • Familiarity with a university environment including an understanding of the organizational and governance structure
      of major colleges and universities.
    • Prefer experience in academic advising and teaching at the collegiate level.
    • Must
      have strong computer skills to include proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint; experience in using virtual meeting platforms
      such as MS Teams or Zoom, proficient with SIS (Banner, PeopleSoft) and Learning Management Systems (Blackboard, Canvas).

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities

    The successful candidate will have the ability to teach in a classroom and
    work well with a diverse population of students. The successful candidate must be able to research and summarize information for reports;
    lead and support project-based work; have effective organizational skills; and must demonstrate effective verbal and written communication
    skills.

    Training will be provided on advising skills and competencies and expected delivery outcomes.
