COIMBATORE: The Tamil Nadu minister for the Hindu religious and charitable endowment department, PK Sekar Babu, on Tuesday inaugurated a bathing pool for Perur Pateeswarar temple elephant, Kalyani.
The pool, which is 10 metres long and 1.8m deep, was constructed at a cost of Rs 50 lakh. The project to build 10 such pools was announced in the 2022-23 budget. “A 12.4m long ramp was also erected to make it easy for the elephant to get into the pool, which can hold 1.2 lakh litres of water four feet deep,” an official said.
The minister later told reporters that there are 29 elephants in 27 temples across the state. “Out of them, 25 temples have bathing pools for elephants. Work to construct such pools is underway in the two other temples.”
